Vocal Exercises (ages 12-13)

This scheme of work develops students’ vocal abilities through fun and challenging exercises, incorporating well known Shakespeare plays along the way. Through progressive class and group activities students will begin to understand the importance of breathing and vocal skills, punctuation, physical action and the shape of words in their performances. The lesson workshops introduce students to ways in which they can improve their vocal delivery and encourages them to question how drama is performed. It enables the students to develop drama skills such as gesture and facial expressions, body language, pronunciation, tone, physical action, and the recognition of the shape and structure of words.


This scheme of work contains 6 drama lesson plans.

  • Lesson 1: The Mouth, The Lips, The Tongue. This lesson introduces students to the way in which the mouth, lips and tongue are used to create different sounds. Students will start to develop their vocal abilities through fun class exercises such as ‘Clap, Jump, Hop’, tongue twisters and breathing exercises.
  • Lesson 2: Physical Intuition. Using Shakespeare’s ‘Coriolanus’ students will begin to explore how word structure effects delivery. Tone, body language and facial expressions will also be examined through group activity.
  • Lesson 3: Punctuation and Thought Structure. With the use of Shakespeare’s ‘A Winter’s Tale’, students will learn how to show punctuation in a piece of text through movement, whilst an introductory game of ‘Zip, Zap, Boing’ will test their speed and wits.
  • Lesson 4: Jostling & Obstacles. After familiarising themselves with ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and ‘Measure for Measure’ students will learn how to support their fellow actors on stage. Class exercises show students how to emphasise key moments in a piece of a text.
  • Lesson 5: Physicalising Language. After a Shakespearean take on ‘Zip, Zap, Boing’ students will learn to incorporate fast paced actions into their performances before creating their own gesture sequence to accompany ‘Measure for Measure’.
  • Lesson 6: Assessment Performance. Using Shakespeare’s Macbeth students will be able to show how they can effectively use their voice read an extract of text. All key Drama forms learnt and revised in the topic are used to recreate their own story and characters and recorded for self-evaluation.
